The black (now green) is @maycocolors Sea Green EL-130, the pink (now white crackles) is Classic Crackles CC-102 and the green (now clear) inside is the indicator dye from our new Opus clear glaze that change the colour of my fingertips a few posts ago 🤭

After the crackles had developed as the pot cooled I added some water based black paint to highlight the cracks.

I did get a stress fracture from this combo - likely due to the elements glaze being only on the relief work of the leaf, in future I would combat this by adding an elements glaze on the inside too to balance the coefficient of expansion.

Shout out to @polkadotdesignuk for guessing the crackles correctly!!!

Well the new website build is actually finishing me off 😅 I have come up against a multitude of issues so far, from the back end erasing itself to our lovely wonderful farm broadband cutting out after I’d just added all the services but not pressed save yet 😳 but hopefully there is a light at the end of the tunnel!

Insta Gurus say you should show your face every 10 posts which I’m not very good at doing - so here’s my face for any new followers and a little tale about how Top of the Pots began…

In 2016 I inherited a little bit of money from my wonderful grandparents after my beloved Nana Mary left us. My (now) husband and I ummed and aahed about what to do with it, it wasn’t quite enough for a deposit on a house but we knew she and my Grandad Len would have wanted it to go towards something for our future.

Then on my 26th birthday, Luke handed me a leaflet for Leapfrog Ceramics, recently put up for sale.

For me it was a no-brainer. I’d had a few forays into self employment but always just a ‘side hustle’ never a full time gig. This opportunity would provide a fulfilling career doing something I loved.

In October we sealed the deal, and come January 2017 we did a full rebrand and launched Top of the Pots.

That same year my best friend Lisa joined the business, which was a lovely full circle moment as we’ve worked together three times before, and we’d actually had her wedding gift commissioned by Leapfrog!

I’d be lying if I said it’s been an easy ride. I’ve come close to giving up, but so far every time I’ve said “let’s give it 6 months” the studio has replied “you’ve got this”.

Mix in COVID, toddlers, changes to our personal situations and somehow: we’ve weathered the storm. Actually that’s an understatement - we’ve danced in the rain!

That’s not to say we haven’t had an INCREDIBLE amount of backup support particularly during our recent expansion and launch of @claynextdoor - this tale wouldn’t be complete without a special shoutout to my mum Janice for her loving childcare support, my dad Richard for his willingness to step up at a moments notice and my husband Luke offering trade services (and a multitude of background support!) from @nmdthamesvalley at the drop of a hat.

And of course, you! Our customers past, present, future and prospective. Thanks for keeping this little dream of mine alive 💖

WHAT A DAY!

Not the most aesthetic photo but thought I’d share a little behind the scenes… all that pottery on the top shelf has been painted the last few days and is waiting patiently to be glazed and fired - the kilns (and me!) have got their work cut out for the next few days!

We had a delivery this morning and have another on Friday to restock all of the lovely goodies already painted. Thank you to all the painters we’ve had this week so far you’ve been awesome!

We’ve sat 47 families to paint over the course of today and yesterday 😅 and still got another 7 tables tonight for Late Paint, BRING IT ON 💪🏻

Taking some time to paint something for myself… in celebration of the Summer Equinox this week I’ve been spending half an hour a day on this plate. I’ll be using this to showcase how we can fuse items together to make something new - this will be turned into a ‘cake’ stand but will eventually be used to display my crystal collection.

I’ve wanted a wheel of the year for a while but couldn’t find something that suited me - then I had a 💡moment that I could just paint one myself 🤣

Taking some time to paint something for myself… in celebration of the Summer Equinox this week I’ve been spending half an hour a day on this plate. I’ll be using this to showcase how we can fuse items together to make something new - this will be turned into a ‘cake’ stand but will eventually be used to display my crystal collection.

I’ve wanted a wheel of the year for a while but couldn’t find something that suited me - then I had a 💡moment that I could just paint one myself 🤣

Something I really struggle with as a small business owner is reflecting on our successes - I often find they are invisible or imposter syndrome stops me from appreciating them.

This evening while we were clearing out we realised the stark contrast in the amount of white slips this year compared to last. For context - each white slip represents one transaction (usually one slip per table or booking, sometimes there can be 2/3 slips per booking if different families paint together)

The pile on the left is 2023 so far, the pile on the right is 2022 Jan - Apr.

The second photo is April 2023 vs April 2022.

Even I can see the growth in this visual 😍 thank you to each and every amazing person who added one of the slips to this pile. I appreciate you more than you’ll ever know. That’s a lot of happy dances right there 🥰

🍄KILN REVEAL🍄

You just can’t beat the magic of the kiln. Things go in, and something entirely different comes out!

You can see a huge difference to the textures in this one. The stalks of the mushrooms have a layer of #cobblestones from @maycopyop which separate in the kiln and give a really awesome natural effect.

Underneath the stalks and on the mushroom caps is #strokeandcoat also from @maycocolors - an incredibly versatile and heavily pigmented glaze.

The mushrooms are set off against #terrabella by @colorobbia_art which is as close in behaviours to a ‘traditional’ pottery glaze we get in a PYOP firing. The top rim is a reactive glaze which moves during firing giving the awesome drippy effect you can see closer if you swipe.

I’m thinking of putting together a folder of techniques you can do on current pieces in a self-led session, would this be something you’d like to see?
